apparently....
...if you happened to be playing music on the PC-side zune client...

...which it is quite possible to download and use without actually having a zune...

...you might want to make sure you locate and download the file d3dx9_31.dll and put it in your system directory.

That is all.

So is this the long-awaited release of Neon PC?

Nah, Neon/PC has >100 effects, camera interactivity, multi-user control and the full editor. These are just three visualizations based on Neon effects that we made for the zune client.

Took a little while to track that file down, but it's worth it. Or rather the visualisations are worthless without it - went from primary school graphics to the university of nebula. Doesn't cope well with anything that doesn't rely on heavy, regular drum 'n' bass, but then what ever has. It's well pretty though :)

You'll be surprised actually, I found it coping admirably well with some rather ambient, noodly Underworld that's not at all driving and obvious :).

Ahh, maybe I'll need to chuck more of my library at it and see what's what. It doesn't like Bach very much though :p

Actually, after posting I realised... the whole point of Neon is to get around that, I guess (at least it sounds that way - I haven't actually played with it, unfortunately). You can fft and all that as much as you like (insert appropriate wordage to indicate I know more than nothing about how it works) but there's no substitute for some monkeybrain driving the thing. Oook!

Where exactly do I get the DLL, and where exactly do I put it? I'd love to see this as I have the Zune player.

Yep, looks way, way, way better than the standard ZUNE visualizations.

Cool stuff.

haha, I must admit to a moment of "that looks like a pair of bollocks up there" with that one myself };-D

reminds me of the entirely unintentional goatse on one of the pics on my Neon/PC gallery site:

I SWEAR I didn't notice that when I took the screenshot, only after it was up in the gallery!

Woah. With the right music that rocks. And this is a tiny, tiny, tiny subset of what Neon can do? Groovy :)

yeah, Neon/PC contains hundreds of effects, can take live input from an attached video source and mix it up in the effects, comtains a full editor system so that you can roll your own effects and import literal images for use in them, then export and share them with other Neon/PC users.

Runs a bit smoother than in the zune client too }:-).

Probably an obvious answer, but does it take live audio input too? Wasted guitary noodling with something interactive to look at, mmm..

Basically it works on whatever is coming out your soundcard so yeah, if you set it up that way you can have it respond to an external input }:-).

Old post now (relative to our better-than-real-time existence), and slightly self-indulgent, but I've been using Zune instead of mplayer for a while now. And, the slightly self-indulgent bit, been listening to lots of old recordings I've made, either just me or me and an old band, and... actually the vis stuff is pretty cool :) Mebbe it grows on you, mebbe it depends on you really understanding the stuff you're listening to, mebbe it's uber-intelligent and learns as it goes (well I dunno, it's possible :) but either way, or the other way, I had some strange moments with it - especially the freaky brains thing. That's just unnecessary, yet I can't live without it now. I might just have to purchase the final wotsit, software (much whiskey now consumed). Ta goatfella :)
