Well, there is slight hope. I mean, they changed the name of the Famicom for international releases.
Why do I just get the feeling that some marketing guy saw the success of the iPod and decided that it was all due to the lowercase "i" Hence, if they gave their machine TWO lowercase "i"'s...
Also think the name is quite stupid. Can't say I want to say to people "I'm off to play with my wii". The Nintendo Go didn't sound that good to me..but much more pleasing than this. In the end, I must prefer the actual project name of Revolution.
It probably looks good in Kanji or Hiragana/Katakana in Japan. Unfortunately, they've pissed it up the wall in virtually every other country.
> They must be putting something in the cocaine at whatever agency does Nintendo's marketing.
Are there any high profile 'defections' from MS or Sony recently to Nintendo? That might explain it as well..double agents. Or the illuminati getting involved. Or perhaps they're Scientologists.
I wouldn't be surprised if it's a marketting trick. Nintendo.com has already been slashdotted into oblivion surely partially due to the sheer stupidity of the name. All that attention can't be bad...
This reminds me a bit of the time Kellogs changed the name of 'Coco Pops' to the patently awful 'Choco Krispies', complete with an intentionally awful modification to the Coco Pops jingle to accomodate the new name with its extra syllable.
Things stay this way for a month or so, then Kellogs hold a telephone poll asking whether they should change the name back or not. With the unprecedented response in favour of changing the name back, Kellogs (and BT) make a fortune in premium rate call charges. The story is all over national newspapers, with every copy-hungry rag feeling the need to express their opinion on the naming of a breakfast cereal. Kellogs get vast amounts of free publicity for their flagship cereal.
That was one of the few times I have ever been inspired to admire marketing people. I'm also amused that it is still recorded almost everywhere as having been a complete disaster due to inept management.
I would be more than happy with Nintendo RS (Revolution System) and matches the DS portable.
Guess they took what their mario buddy does best when yelling (Wheee!) and thought it'd make for a great name? No way, just leave it to Mario to screw things up ;)
I think they are probably, er, weeing themselves ;).
I still want one, mind - just can't see myself talking about it too much by name. "Are you going to be queueing up outside the shop for a launch-day wii?" etc etc... };-)

The stars are aligned and they foretell of this future.
Stage 1.
Pick a cool name for your top secret project.
"Katana"
Stage 2.
Change it to a WTF? name before release.
"Dreamcast"
Stage 3.
Drop out of the console hardware market so you can focus on making games.

Stupid stupid...
I can't believe it. Only Nintendo could come up with this. Do you think Sony and Microsoft are laughing yet?-----------
